AI-Driven Family-Centered Experiences: LG ThinQ Platform

Contributed to the redesign of LG ThinQ, a global smart home platform used in over 154 countries, creating AI-powered experiences that helped families stay connected through shared device access, voice interactions, and cross-device communication. Working closely with product, engineering, and research teams, I helped design intuitive experiences that strengthened connection, accessibility, and collaboration across multi-generational households.

Challenge

The LG ThinQ app suffered from a fragmented UX and limited AI integration, resulting in inconsistent smart home control and usability gaps across global markets. Families faced difficulty in safely and intuitively managing appliances across multiple devices and generations, highlighting the need for a unified, family-centered smart home experience.

Objective

To create a seamless, AI-powered smart home experience that supports safe and intuitive appliance control and shared access for all family members. This involved improving appliance pre-configuration, enabling fluid AI-driven control, optimizing energy usage based on user behavior, and enhancing usability for multi-generational households globally.

Result

The redesign increased platform engagement and performance, achieving a 43% rise in daily active users, 24% energy savings, 37% improvement in AI voice recognition accuracy, and a 51% boost in international retention. The unified, family-centered experience set a new benchmark for global smart home platforms and enhanced convenience, safety, and connected interactions for families worldwide.

Research

A user survey was conducted on families with children in the U.S.

and multigenerational households, including townhouses in

California, where advanced smart homes and smart appliances

are fully installed.

Planned and designed all scenarios and voice commands for Google-connected LG appliances, developed by the LG
engineering team and integrated with Google AI.

As a result, the survey yielded a variety of meaningful insights.
