Overview
Google entered the global smart home market by integrating its first AI speaker with LG smart appliances. As the Product Designer and Project Lead, I was responsible for designing voice-first, hands-free UX scenarios that enabled natural, localized control of LG appliances across diverse markets. I also coordinated collaboration between Google and LG to align technical and interaction requirements. After being showcased at IFA and CES, the product launched globally—improving user efficiency by 46%, reducing setup time by 62%, and exceeding revenue targets by 11% ($18.7B).

What LG did
All scenarios and voice commands related to LG appliances were developed entirely by LG. Leveraging long-standing customer insights and proprietary appliance data, LG was able to design proactive, AI-driven interaction scenarios tailored to its ecosystem. This foundational work was executed in-house to ensure the experience aligned with LG’s product logic and user expectations. It was later integrated with Google Assistant technology.
Challenge
Integrating LG’s AI appliances with Google’s first AI speaker required overcoming challenges in multimodal UX design, cultural adaptation, and cross-company coordination — despite LG’s wealth of proprietary data and experience.
Objective
Design a voice-first UX powered by proactive AI that enables seamless, hands-free control of LG appliances, unifies experiences across LG and Google ecosystems, and adapts intelligently to local languages and usage patterns in global markets.
Result
The new voice-first UX increased user task efficiency by 46%, reduced device setup time by 62%, and enabled a seamless experience across appliances and global markets—contributing to an 11% revenue uplift.
Preview final design
All proactive AI scenarios and voice commands for LG appliances were originally developed in-house by LG, grounded in long-standing customer insights and proprietary device data. These AI-driven interaction models were designed to anticipate user needs and automate smart home behaviors within the LG ecosystem. Once validated, the scenarios were integrated with Google Assistant—bridging LG’s domain expertise with Google’s voice technology to deliver seamless, multimodal experiences across global markets.
